History of the Chelsea Market
The Chelsea Market, located on 9th avenue between west 15th and west 16th streets in New York City, was once an old cookie factory occupied by Nabisco.
In September 1996, plans for a 200,000 square-foot indoor marketplace specializing in gourmet food and shopping emerged. In the plans of expanding her business, Eleni Gianopulos signed a lease to be one of the market's first tenants.
The concept behind the Chelsea Market was to created a 'cash and carry' shopping experience with the freshest products straight from the manufacturer to the customer. In order to make the marketplace more appealing to the public, the tenants were encouraged to set up their production so the customers could see the manufacturing process.
Eleni's New York is one of many gourmet food establishments in the market, including Amy's Bread and The Lobster Place. There are now approximately 18 stores on the ground floor and a variety of different offices and businesses above, including the NYC home of the Food Network and MLB.com.
